Sound Painter: Color My Voice

In short: Sound Painter collects no personal data. It has no internet access, no ads, no analytics and no accounts. The microphone is analysed on the device in real time and nothing is ever recorded or sent anywhere. Everything the app remembers stays on the device.
Who this app is for
Sound Painter is a free educational game for children aged about 3 to 6, including children who learn at their own pace. It is designed to be set up and supervised by a parent, carer or teacher.
The microphone
- The app uses the microphone only while a listening screen is open (the voice warm-up, the painting canvas and the picture-colouring screens). It stops listening when the child leaves those screens or the app goes to the background.
- Sound is processed in memory, a few hundredths of a second at a time, to measure loudness, pitch and which vowel sound it resembles. Those measurements are turned into colours and shapes on screen, and the sound is then discarded.
- Audio is never recorded, saved to storage, or transmitted. The app does not request internet access, so it cannot send audio or anything else off the device.
What is stored on the device
To let each child continue where they left off, the app keeps the following in its private storage on the device:
- For each child profile: the animal picture chosen, an optional nickname typed by the adult (the app never asks for a real name), the play level and settings chosen by the adult, and the child's voice range from the warm-up (a few numbers such as "lowest and highest pitch in hertz").
- Practice history for the grown-ups' dashboard: when play sessions happened, how long they lasted, seconds of voice, and how many pictures were coloured.
- The child's paintings, saved as images.
This information is not shared with us or anyone else. It is excluded from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer, so it does not leave the device that way either.
Deleting data
In the app's grown-ups area (behind a question for adults) you can reset a child's progress, delete their paintings, or remove the child completely. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored.
What we do not do
- No advertising, and no advertising or analytics software.
- No accounts, sign-in or cloud storage.
- No location, camera, contacts or device identifiers.
- No in-app purchases and no links out of the app for children.
Children's privacy
Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children. The settings and dashboard are behind a question for adults, in line with Google Play's Families Policy.
Changes
If a future version works differently, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the effective date above will change.
